At the heart of the Dynastar women’s all-mountain collection is the Legend W 88. We talk a lot about the most versatile shape, and we keep coming back to the ~88 mm underfoot width. For true all-mountain skiing, this shape is capable of handling the most diverse conditions. Too narrow to be a powder ski, too wide to be a pure carving ski, the Legend W 88 sits right in the middle. Built with a stout wood core made of Poplar and a Titanium layer reinforcement, these things have the capability to handle any and all conditions. With Dynastar’s revolutionary 5-point sidecut, the Legend W 88 is a quick-turning ski, with a 15-meter turn radius at the 166 cm length. As the Legend series gets wider, the taper increases, but at the 88 width, it’s more on-trail oriented. With less taper, you get more effective edge, and this leads to better stability at speed. So feel free to let these things run on the groomers, as they’ll hold an edge and rip though crud and chop with ease. As with a lot of skis in our test, we like to see it when testers are somewhat caught off-guard. They expect one thing and come away with a totally different idea.
Allison Ruschp skied the 166 and found it to be the right length. She was “pleasantly surprised. I loved this ski. With the metal laminate, this ski is stiff (but not too stiff), and a great carving ski. With its’ tip shape, it rides right over crud smoothly. This ski can do it all—tight, quick turns and long, arcing turns.” Her scores were all 5’s with the exception of a 4 for forgiveness and a 3.5 for flotation. With a stiff ski at this width, those lower scores are unsurprising. In terms of the target audience: “I think this ski is more for advanced intermediate to expert skiers. It’s a stiffer ski than the others in this lineup.” True, indeed, the Legend W 88 is certainly the stiffest and the most demanding of the Legend W models.

Also on the 166, Jana Ross had nothing but 5’s all the way down the scorecard. “It was a true joy to ride this ski down the slopes. I felt confident and stable in long turns going pretty fast. Yet when I switched to short turns, I could enjoy the quietness, playfulness, and fun-nature of the skis. I felt really in control and enjoyed the ride.” Pretty high-level praise from Jana, here, as her analysis surely backs up her scores. It’s pretty easy to see that the burlier construction of the Legend W 88 makes a big difference in the overall stability of the ski.

Sam Purnell liked her 166 cm test length, and gave high scores for flotation and playfulness. Her overall impression score of 4 matched the versatility and forgiveness, so it looks like we have another lady skier who really enjoyed her time on this well-rounded stick. “Awesome all-terrain, all-mountain ski. Fast, whippy, dependable. Responsive to aggressive and fast skiing. Good ski for intermediates and up skiers who want to rip!” In terms of how the ski fared in various conditions, Sam also noted that she “tested it on groomers, ice, and in the woods with success.”
As a true all-mountain ski, it’s hard to go wrong with the 2020 Legend W 88. These things have the shape, build, and profile to handle a ton of different snow conditions and terrain. Our testers were all impressed with the stability and reactive nature of the skis, and all really seemed to enjoy their time on them.
