Sunday will see host nation Qatar take on Ecuador in the opening game of what many already consider to be among the most controversial editions of the Fifa World Cup ever.

Fifa president Gianni Infantino has made the bold suggestion that five billion people will watch this year’s World Cup, which will see 64 matches played across eight stadiums over 28 days. Soccer’s global governing body expects more than one million visitors will travel to Qatar, which is reported to have spent in excess of US$200 billion on staging the tournament, including around US$8 billion on infrastructure.
